New Computers have only DVD-RW Drive...Why?
Posted by Denny B on May 23rd, 2006

The new computers seem to have only one optical drive
a DVD-RW Drive. I assume that this is a "Burner."
This being so how do you burn a disc if you have only
one optical drive.
On my older computer I have a CD-Rom and a CD burner.
Why is there no CD-Rom drive? How do you copy?

Thanks in advance

Denny B spewed forth:
Option one: software. The disc burning software will copy the original disc
data to the hard drive, and burn it to a new disc.

Option two: add a second drive (duh!)

You are right, it can read and write cds and dvds.

You mean copying a disc. Now every cd burning software these days has some
thing like a "virtual image drive" where you can first read in the disc to
copy, then change the disc to a writeable one, and "burn".
Since newer computers do have big enough harddrives it makes sense,
especially because lifecycles of current dvdrw drives are optimized to span
warranty period plus some months.
Same goes for harddisks. Remember, the next generation will have content
protection included.
