New PC with 44 + Temp/Temporary files ?
Posted by Agnes L on November 26th, 2005

XP Home/MS Works/ MS Media Center 2005

I purchased a new computer late Sept and have installed and
downloaded very little other than start-up, antivirus, firewall, and
spyware programs. When l checked the temp and temporary
files l was shocked to find so many files one of which is
PKMTEMPL.DLL. When l opened the folder l found 17 additional
dll files. Also found numerous install and uninstall Sq/State
Template files. Is it safe to delete them, particularly the DLL files?

Thanks, Aggie

Stuff in the temp folders? Ignore it. Lot's of stuff gets put there. You can
empty the folders if you want, but unless you're critically short on hard
drive space or are having spyware/adware/popup types of problems, I'd leave
it alone.

As for the specific file, see here:

Thank you for the response. I have ample space, but when you asked about
spyware etc. problems l decided to run AdAware again. Earlier today l ran a
full scan and quarantined 45 critical objects. When l scanned a short time
ago
l found another 35 critical objects (all Data Miner) even though l only
visited 4
sites since the earlier scan. Any idea where Data Miner is coming from? I
checked google and while there are several removal tools, l couldn't find
it's
origin.

Thanks, Aggie

"Data miner" nearly always refers to cookies. Just delete them.

On 11/25/2005 11:57 PM or thereabouts, Agnes L appears, somewhat
unbelievably, to have opined:

Those are just cookies set by websites you visit. They really aren't
harmful to your computer or your health. They allow advertisers to
monitor the sites you visit in order to target ads that they think you
may be interested in.

By all means delete them if you wish. I do, but they are really not a
threat.

Thanks.
Just couldn't understand how l acquired so many critical objects from
visiting 4 sites. Guess l'll just ignore ,or just continure to quarantine
them.
