- new SATA harddrive recommendations?
- Posted by billybronco on October 29th, 2004
Hi,
I want to build myself a new pc, this one is being passed on to a poor
student friend.
I am planning on installing 2 SATA hard drives in a RAID stripe array on an
ABIT mobo (havent decided which model yet).
Could you guys recommend some good quality harddrive models, which are known
for being quiet and fast. I am looking at 160-200GB each.
Thanks for any suggestions.

Frankly I think you'd be better off with a 74GB WD Raptor as
primary/OS drive and a 200GB Seagate as 2nd drive (not
RAID0).

I have a P80 (160gig) and the thing is so quiet the only way I know it's on
is the lights on the front of the PC.

If I were going to get the best, I'd go with Seagate:

Dont know about that. I've had just as many WD drives go bad as IBM, Maxtor,
Quantum drives. Hell, even have a couple of drink coasters made from patters
from the last 2 WD drives that went bad.
If your going to go SATA I'd personaly recomend looking in to the companys
offering a min 3 yr warrenty and large caches. The newer Maxtor 7200rpm 16meg
cache drives will actualy meet or exceed the benchmarks of the 10,000rpm
Raptors. Plus you can get the 16meg drives up to at least 300gigs where as the
Raptors will only get you to 74gig. Last time I checked prices the Raptors were
hitting about $170 and the Maxtor 300gig's were running bout $200-220. Also
check articles on drives at places like Tomshardware.com and Anandtech.com,
they tend to have pretty comprehesive testing.
Good luck
