New UK ISP Required
Posted by NickNike on February 25th, 2006

Sorry if this is off topic, but could not find a relevant NG.
I'm with Plusnet in the UK and things are going wrong. Can someone recommend
a decent ISP here in the UK. I'm on ADSL and require the ISP to give a good
service including access to all newsgroups including binaries. Or can you
point me to a relevant NG.
Many thanks for any help,
nn

Well im on cable with NTL, so cant really recommend a decent adsl ISP.
However, for a couple of good sites to read customers comments & reviews
to help you decide are:

Misconception. You aren't dependent on your ISP for a newsfeed.
And usually non-ISP feeds are better than ISP news feeds, anyway.

cheapest 1 mb connection (distance restrictions) and then being able to
afford a seperate newsfeed. Apparently PN could provide if they invest in
the hardware, but they are also applying restrictions and it was not the
deal I had originally signed-up for about 8 months ago.
thanks again,

They don't exist in the UK. You had a go at BY and they are about as
good as it gets and they have got a lot worse since you left.

All you can do is get a decent unlimited connection and subscribe to a
decent premium server. Have a look at Astraweb.

For newsgroups you are only going to get a very good service from a
subscription site.

Clara have a news only account,

I am using this less and less since seeing other recommendations for
http://www.giganews.com/ which I have been on for a year,
and my backup is Forte Agent

Thanks EricP, nice to hear from you. Yeah, my conclusions are falling in
line with your advice. I'll take a look at Astraweb.
Changing ISP is a bit of a b*gg*r, takes 10 days to turn round and I have a
web site to service. Wonder why the service in the UK is poor, or am I just
neurotic.

Cheapest uncapped are AOL and Demon. Neither supply newsgroup access.

I used to use Clara for binary newsgroups - good completion but short
retention.
