news server quit on me
Posted by philo on April 13th, 2008

I've been off Usenet for a few days as my newsserver
went down...
actually had to to some work around the house.

Maybe *this* server will work?

Did you add that "signature" (not really a signature since there is no
sigdash delimiter line) at the end? Or was it Teranews spamifying your
post? If you use the freebie Teranews server, your posts through them
are spam.

No I did not add that...so will have to wait until Monday to see if I can
have my ISP trace the problems with my real newsserver...

of course...there is always Google groups ...

Oh well...back to working on my house projects

I will try my own delimiter

What, and have Blinky biting at your ankles for Google Grouping? Ooh
ooh.

Only helps for those that use newsreaders that strip signatures from the
quoted content. Users still see the Teranews spam promo sig when
reading your post (unless they have a newsreader that strips out sigs
when reading posts).

No. I am not going to use Google groups.

When I saw kachi posting from Google I knew that this time he really was
dead!

Yes

I'll have to get my regular server back again. My ISP uses giganews

I use www.newsguy.com

Pay by the year it's only $40. They are about the only ones who give
you bandwidth and you keep what you haven't used.

I recommend:

- do /not/ use so-called free teranews for posting to text newsgroups

- free teranews is not free, it is a commercial server which costs
onetime $4 and the server attaches a very very ugly advertising trailer
to all of your posts

- the $4 teranews server is good for downloading a few binaries a day,
not for posting to text groups because of the ugly trailer

- there are plenty of completely free newsgroups, and there are also
pay newsservers which are actually cheaper than $4 for many gigs of news

- check out aioe which doesn't require registering or motzarella which
does

- you should have alternate newsservers in any case so that if a
newsserver goes down, which teranews does more than others, that you
will have a working newsserver instead of doing housework

Though the trailer may be ugly...
it's nothing compared to the refection I have to see in the mirror each
morning

But I already pay my own ISP $360 a year or so.
This is the first time I've had the problem.

.... yes, but you have little control over what you see in the mirror and
also your newsgroup conversants don't have to look at your reflection
several times a day.

Why should you pay tera and then spamvertise/proselytize them to us?

Some people filter that/your tera MID out *@news.teranews.com and then
you and your teranews spam disappear for them.

One reason for marginalizing $4freetera posters is to try to keep other
newsservers from adopting the same ugly practice.

Yes I usually spend only a minute or two shaving in the morning. I don't
have to impress anyone where I work.
I repair industrial equipment...and as long as it gets fixed, the equipment
never complains.

They say that when you get older...one day you will see your father looking
back at you on the mirror.

I could live with that...but in my case I am starting to see my
*grandfather* looking back it me

Normally you post to a giganews server which you access because your
provider has outsourced their news. Your usual/previous Path looks like
this in part:

!local02.nntp.dca.giganews.com!nntp.ntd.net!news.n td.net.

That is similar to how I post to the giganews server which is working
just fine. My path:

!local02.nntp.dca.giganews.com!nntp.earthlink.com

Your connectivity provider shows up in your headers, which is a netwurx
dsl.

I don't know how your provider tells you to access usenet. news.ntd.net
and nntp.ntd.net and news.netwurx.net don't resolve. The netwurx site
doesn't list the newsserver.

However, there is a ntd site which shows a newsserver which is a
giganews server news.northnet.net Canonical name: news.isp.giganews.com
and of course it answers idserve

Initiating server query ...
Looking up IP address for domain: news.northnet.net
The IP address for the domain is: 216.196.97.142
Connecting to the server on remote port: 119
[Connected] The server greeted our connection with this message:
200 News.GigaNews.Com
Query complete.

Ignore this.
Some people get their panties in a twist over the url the news service
slaps on the end.

If they don't like it they have the option of filtering it out.

You paid your $4 so use it

But the more important point is that there are other free news
servers, and that's a reason why GG isn't necessary anyway.
