I am using text.news.ntlworld.com as my news server, does anyone know if NTL
offer a binary server that is of use?

yes they do, but it's not upto much, you'd be better of subscribing to a
decent news server for binaries, eg

Claranews
EasyNews
Giganews
Astraweb
etc
