- No desktop icons or taskbar
- Posted by RV on May 5th, 2005
I have a friend running XP Home. When Windows loads there are no Desktop
icons or taskbar (just wallpaper). I just cleaned out a massive infestation
of spyware and viruses and was hoping that this was the answer to the icon
problem. I am quite good at removing spyware and viruses and am sure that
his system is now clean (I have also run a combination of about 7 programs
and they all coming up clean).
If I CTR - ALT - DEL Explorer.exe is NOT running. If I try to manually run
it, it loads for a second and then closes (no events in any error logs).
I tried installing SP2 and that went fine, but did not fix the problem.
Cant do a system restore or repair since the SP was just installed and the
restore points are pre SP2
This KB didn't Help:

I can run Internet Explorer (and brows the HD with it)
Tried creating a new user profile, but new user has same problems
Safe mode produces the same results
Any ideas other then reinstalling?

I hope someone comes along with a good idea, but since you can save any
important files and then reinstall, that seems like less trouble than
going through all the contortions of saving this install. When removing
lots of spyware, it often kicks a lot of the props out from under the
OS, so to speak.

Hi,
There is a setting somewhere that hides/shows the desktop icons. But I cant
remember where.

Franklin: Right click on desktop, / Arrange Icons By / Show Desktop
Icons. Of course, untick the box to hide icons.

They are not hidden, explorer.exe is not staying loaded.
BTW: I also ran a SFC with no positive results.
Thanks anyway.

Since it's XP, do a repair install with the XP CD ... you'll have to
re-apply SP2 afterwards.
