"Okay, I Know The Video Is On This DVD Somewhere...."

Two years ago, my dad got a DVD recorder for Christmas. He has been
very happy putting vacation videos on disc (so I can watch my sister's
weddings any time I want over the next fifty years, oh joy) and using
it as a DVR for things like bowling.

Today, an electrical short in the unit killed it. Now, he has a
problem. After two years, the chances of him finding a duplicate
machine are remote. And there are a whole bunch of vacation videos he
didn't finalize.

I'm thinking I may have to extract the video. I do some desktop
video. There is clearly burned content on the discs, but when I put
it in my computer, it can't read any of the data.

The data has to be on there somewhere, and I'm thinking one solution
is for me to simply pull it off the disc and burn it to a DVD myself.
But I don't know how to get to it. Does anyone know of a utility or
something that will enable me to retrieve the info off the discs? I'm
running Windows and Linux.
