- Opening a URL with embedded password
- Posted by xman on February 28th, 2004
When I click on a link in Internet Explorer 6.x (WIN XP PRO), such as:
http://user:password@www.test.com/so...dprotectedpage
I get an error that says:
The page cannot be displayed
The page you are looking for might have been removed or had its name
changed.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Please try the following:
Open the user
assword@www.test.com/somepasswordprotectedpage home page,
and then look for links to the information you want.
If you typed the page address in the Address bar, make sure that it is
spelled correctly.
If you still cannot open the page, click the Internet Explorer
Search button to look for similar sites.
Now the link is good, if i login manually on the login prompt I get in.
What setting can i change to fix this? I use the google toolbar pop-up
blocker (disabled), IE security is MEDIUM, cookies/privacy are MEDIUM, and
firewall is disabled.

Did you apply the recent MS Security patch that disabled this type of
URL from working?

This Internet Explorer cumulative update also includes a change to the
functionality of a clear-text authentication feature in Internet
Explorer. The update removes support for handling user names and
passwords in HTTP and HTTP with Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) or HTTPS URLs
in Microsoft Internet Explorer. The following URL syntax is no longer
supported in Internet Explorer or Windows Explorer after you install
this software update:
http(s)://username
assword@server/resource.ext
For more information about this change, please see Microsoft Knowledge
Base article 834489.
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;834489
This update will also invalidate usernames and passwords that were
previously cached in Internet Explorer’s protect store. After installing
this update, users will be prompted to type their usernames and password
in order to access authenticated sites. If the user selects the
“Remember my password” check-box they will continue to be stored locally
after the initial visit to these Web Sites. More information is
available in the Frequently Asked Questions section of this document.
