- Opinions on Partion Size, XP Pro & Programs
- Posted by sylpt@canada.com on January 19th, 2004
I have a 40GB HD and a 120GB HD. I'm going to install XP Pro on the 40GB
drive.
What is the best set-up in regards to partitions? I'm thinking of going
with a 10 or 20GB partition for XP Pro alone and the rest of the drive for
another partition with programs.
Is 10GB too small?
Is putting the rest of my applications on the other partition a good idea?
For the 120GB HD, I'm thinking of having one of the partitions be 80GB
partition, as I'll be using that for some video editing.
Comments/Concerns?
TIA

Well, I don't think having the applications on the other partition is a bad
idea, but it isn't a good idea either. I mean, why would you want that
anyway?
As for the other stuff, it seems pretty good. I have a 60GB and a 80GB hard
drive and I just made a huge amount of partitions for sake of simple use,
here is my set-up:
C: 30GB : Windows + Programs
D: 35GB : Back Up (Drive Image make images of my drives overnight every few
days and saves them here)
E: 50GB : Media (everything from music to fonts to photos, videos, etc.)
F: 10GB : Websites (i am a web developer, so this is where i keep all my
work related stuff)
X: 5GB: My Documents
Y: 5GB: Mom's Documents
Z: 5GB : Sister's Documents
Now a lot of people tell me that it's too many partitions, but I really like
it. When I format my computer, I don't need to worry about all my other junk
getting lost.
If I were you, i'd do something like this:
C: 30GB : Windows + Programs
D: 10GB : Documents, Personal Files
E: 100GB: Video
F: 20GB: Back Up (keep all your important stuff here, and a drive image of
your C so when you re-format it's all set-up already... just make sure you
set-up DriveImage to use compression when making the images, otherwise it
won't fit)
As for 10GB being too small for Windows... nonsense... if you really do want
windows on a seperate partition then have that partition be no bigger than
5GB... you REALLY don't need more. Just make sure you set-up programs like
Photoshop to use a different drive (the biggest one) as their "scratch"
drive, otherwise you'll be in trouble.
Good luck!

I've had problems with XP Pro installed on a 5GB partition. After awhile
I'd get errors about running out of disk space on my system disk.
Also, Photoshop's scratch disk should be installed on a partition(s) that
doesn't have XP's pagefile (which defaults to the system disk). Mind you,
the pagefile is better off on a separate hard drive (or at least partition)
than the system, anyways...

Ummm... that's what I said.... the scratch file should be on a seperate
partition....
And how in the world did your system disk run out of room??? The WinXP Pro
installation takes no more than 1GB. So unless you weren't thinking and
didn't change the location of your temp. directories, there is no reason at
all why it should start running out of room.
