- Out of timing (analog) message
- Posted by Steve F on March 30th, 2008
When my PC boots up it does not seem to do anything apart from:
1) A green light on PC stating there is power to PC
2) There is a red light showing that there is HDD activity
3) On the monitor the only message i get is "Out of Timing (Analog)"
in yellow letters against a black back ground for approx 10 seconds
and then black screen for 10 secs and then the "out of timing" meaage
again
The monitor worked OK when connected to my laptop
Any idea what the problem is.
If its of any use the motherboard is an Asus A7n8x-e, 1Gb memory, ATI
9800SE All in Wonder video card and operating system is windows XP.
Any help appreciated to attempt to identify cause?
Regards
Steve Fisher

The one component you don't mention by name is the monitor,
monitors are configured to display basic messages if something
is wrong, the obvious one being "no signal". Then there is the
sync error messages etc. I would guess it's the monitor, certainly
it is doubtful that it's a message from your PC/Graphics etc.
Logon to the manufacturers site of your monitor, click the support
and/help link, find the troubleshooter/FAQ etc, and check if that is
a standard error message for that model of monitor.
You could check out the AMD site for your card, but I suspect it is
a specific monitor error?

The monitor is an Elonex (17 inch) model LC-AE
The monitor works fine with another PC. I also got my TV from bedroom
which has VGA input.
With the bedroom monitor i got a slightly different message.(ie
windows did not boot correctly - i then had various options
Reboot from last known good configuration
Boot in safe mode
Boot in VGA mode
Boot in safe mode with networking
etc
I tried them all and got as far as the windows splash screen (ie just
before i see the user ids on the PC). Splash screen shows for approx
10 seconds and then windows reboots!!

stick of ram. b) putting a different video card (or none if there's a
video card in the motherboard) in the computer, still leaving all the slots
as a). If you get it working with b) it's the ATI card with a) it's a
faulty/insufficient power supply.

I've checked everywhere for that specific error message:
"Out of Timing (Analog)"
Checked AMD/ATI's troubleshooter, I checked the MS KB, I checked
everywhere - there is no error found of that wording.
But your Asus MoBo site does have a troubleshooter for a search on timing
errors and boot problems:
"Unable to enter Windows at system boot up"
And also:
"System Malfunction Troubleshooting (no display while power up)"
http://support.asus.com/troubleshoot...Language=en-us
It is only the Asus site and for your specific MoBo that came up with
anything remotely related to a search on the error you receive, but
the Asus site makes no reference to any error being displayed on-screen.
Are you 100% confident that you have the wording of the error correct?

Unplug the computer, open the case and remove and reseat the video card.
If this doesn't help, try the onboard video or a known good card.

This has happened to me with the same video card. Just go to the internet and update the
drivers for the ati 9800 pro. My video card worked perfect until i upgraded to a samsung
lcd monitor. It was working fine with a benq lcd monitor.

Don't listen to that stupid Chuckcar. I can also tell you when it does
work it vacillates between digital and analogue many, many times before
finally ending up on analogue when your pc starts up. All you need to do
is update the video card drivers by way of the internet. the same thing
happened to me with the same 9800 pro video card when i changed lcd
monitors from a benq to a samsung.

Why not just tell him to try a different computer and a different monitor and
see if that works? Just like those sympattycake newsgroups you'll have the poor
guy taking his computer apart for no reason in the world.
