Pavilion xt933 on board video
Posted by Troy on April 20th, 2005

Does anyone know how to disable the on board video display for a
pavilion xt933? Something went wrong and nothing is displayed on the
monitor. The monitor was tested on another computer and works. I put a
new video card in but the on board video seems to override the card.
Also, how about disabling the on board sound?

thanks.

Check in your BIOS (read your manual). If there is no obvious
disable method in the BIOS, find and set the Shared Memory
to zero, which should effectively disable it.

Have you tried calling HP? They may be able to help you too.

Mike the reply below 'no, why would i?' didn't come from me (parker). I'm
not sure if I am supposed to responed to 'sender' or 'group' I'm trying
group. Thanks for your reply I called hp and did not get any usable help.
I've searched the web google groups and others and have gotten a some
answers. It looks to me like it is a new computer or a new motherboard.

After a customer today----you have connected your monitor to the output of
your new card?
The f1 key will get you to the bios during boot

Info on your machine here

That is correct. Replying to sender would reply by e-mail, not
something that should be done on newsgroups -- keep replies
in the group, so that others may benefit. Not to mention that
the vast majority of people don't relish their inbox being invaded
by usenet replies.

Erm, now I'm confused. Are you telling me that you are the
OP (Original Poster), "Troy"?

Why? Have you tried my advice?

Troy and Parker are the same. I said I was new at this . I don't have the
manual. In my searching I came across this 'F1 key when the keyboard light
comes on. Wait about 5 seconds. Press the F5 key and press ENTER. This
restores the default settings of the BIOS. Wait about 5 seconds. Press the
F10 key and then press the ENTER key. This saves and exits the BIOS.' I did
that several times with no effect. It is hard to do anything when nothing
appears on the monitor . Thanks for your reply. I'm off work now and
heading home. I'll try again tomorrow .

What you have described is a totally useless exercise.
You are trying to disable the onboard video, not reset
the CMOS settings to default. You need to go through
the BIOS menus to look for an option for disabling
the AGP video. If it is not there, you may be able to
disable it from Device Manager. Press the WIN key
and the PAUSE/BREAK key at the same time to bring
up the System properties dialog. Go to the Hardware
tab and press 'Device Manager'. Open the 'Display
Adapter' device and right click on it, and choose 'Disable'.
When you get asked to restart the computer, say yes
BUT shut the compter down -- do NOT restart. Put
the new card into the computer and connect the monitor
to it. Restart the computer and the new card should be
detected by the hardware wizard -- your onboard should
be disabled -- so make sure that you have your driver
disk handy.

Thanks for your reply Mike. It seemed to me that pressing those keys would
work even if the monitor doesn't show anything. But, I can't follow you
suggestions because the monitor doesn't show anything. I realized the video
card I put in was from a Pentium I 166. It probably is not plug and play.
I'll try a newer card .
