PC locking up.... ???
Posted by advid on March 17th, 2005

.... when doing hard disk intensive stuff (batch conversion of pic -
resizing ect and just recently heavy Photoshop multi layers stuff)
where the drive is constantly accessing reading/writing I'm begining to
get a total freeze up of my PC. Screen just locks - no mouse control
and CTRL/ALD/DEL has no effect....

Only way out is to press RESET and do a re-boot...

I've CHDSK 'ed and DEFRAGGED the HD and reinstalled stuff.... no
improvement...

Could it be the HD on the way out ? - Only a couple of years old (80
gig Seagate)....

Could be the RAM........do diagnostics on RAM's and free some of it, could
be some application program not releasing some of the RAM.

I had similar problem recently, it is probably your PSU is not sufficient.
Due to your processor using more power to perform your tasks listed it is
causing your pc to lock up. My pc used to reset itself sporadically to. I
now have a 550 watt PSU instead of the standard 350 watt one & now pc works
perfectly. Hope this helps

looking back I think this first started when I got an auto update from MS
and went with Service Pack 2...

because it wouldn't play DVD's on Media Player (ver 10) I uninstalled it by
doing a System Restore to previous setting.... since then I've stopped MS
Auto updates and continue as it was..... could install/uninstall be
anything ???

Do you guys on here suggest going to SP2.... i've got good firewall and
other stuff...
