i have a emachines pc that wouldnt come on at all.

i removed power supply, opened him up and there was black on pcb and one of
the electrolytic capacitors had a domed top when i know they should be
flat..

so i put a complete new psu in and although the pc power light comes on now
and the psu fan spins the rest of the pc is dead.

do you think mobo or cpu was killed when psu died or do you think maybe the
new psu i bought could be faulty?

what would you try next?

Technically, without taking voltage readings, or doing something else, it is
impossible to know. Using the process of elimination is the best way to fix
things. Try another supply, and if it does not work, then the fault is the
mother board, and or some other card that is in it. It is possible that
there was a short on the original mother board, and it caused the original
power supply to go bad.

Compare the loom from the new power supply to the motherboard plug is the
same as the old one, ie no swapped pins.
Check the voltages from the power supply with a multimeter (+3.3, +5,
+12, -5,-12)
If these checks are OK

Remove all connections and cards from the PC until you only have
Motherboard, CPU, Ram and video card.
Restart.
If the PC starts, add cards, drives etc one at a time till you find the
culrit.
If it does not start with MB/CPU/RAM/Video only, plug the CPU/RAM/Video (if
not onboard) into another PC with suitable specification and see if they
work. If these 'removeable' components work ok you most likely have a fried
motherboard.

Cheers
Paul.

Sounds like the mobo is dead.... easy way to tell is the black stuff on the
board itself and the capacitor you mentioned. Replace the board, keep the
new psu and all should be ok. The processor should be alright. I've seen a
few boards with this same problem. The processor was just fine in every
case.

It's not clear if the bad cap was in the ps or on the mobo.

If the ps fan spins for a second then shuts off that's a sign of a bad
ps. However, this is not your case.
