pci video card for gaming?
Posted by Diehard on January 1st, 2004

my dad just got a Sony Vaio RS410 with onboard video. I opened it to find no
agp slot, it's torn off, they un hooked the slot completely and all left is
an empty space with pins and holes. Is this normal for sony computers or
others? based on this i can only get a pci video card. unless sony was
willing to hook up the agp slot somehow. or if they said it's not normal and
there should be an agp slot, I'd take it back to the store best buy where i
got it from. what is a high end good gaming pci card? is it only a GF4 MX? I
know some of those are pci. Which might be ok considering he has shitty
3dmark 2001 performance with onboard.

Asus Kirin-V is the motherboard watever that is.

Ok, I'm seeing pci video cards at newegg like the GF 5200 FX 128mb ddr ram
cards for under $80. Are these any good? Can someone please recomend a pci
card for gaming like these?

Also is there a way on the sony vaio pc's to disable the onboard video? Or
will hooking up a pci video card just work and the pc will use it if it sees
i have hooked up a card to it?

That is normal. Most vendors like sony who distribute machines with on-
board video do not provide an AGP slot, as the AGP features are routed to
the onboard video chipset instead of the slot, and the slot represents
extra expense.

You could go for a GF4 MX PCI, or a GeForce 5200FX or whatever they call it
now in PCI form. Both will do adaquately. Considering the machine has
onboard video, it probably doesn't have a high speed processor or a whole
lot of memory, so the difference between the video cards shouldn't be that
bad.

Those are about all you will find. You may find some ATI offerings similar
to those nVidia cards, but nothing very fancy. PCI is dead for video, as
the PCI bus is only 133MB/sec, while the AGP bus is over 4 times as fast
and dedicated to video.

You should look in the BIOS and see if it can be disabled. If not, just
insert the PCI card and hopefully the board does it automatically when you
install your own video card.

It is not a pos and is not a refurb. it works fine.

if you guys look it's the Sony Vaio RS410.

P4 2.66ghz
256mb ddr ram. I ordered from crucial 512mb ddr 2700 ram for this model
sony.
120gb WD ata100 7200 rpm hard drive
sony DU-U12 or 12U, i dunno dvd+-rw
cdrom drive
firewire usb2.0 etc etc
really nice, but onboard video.

So tell me this. There is GF 5200 FX 128mb ddr for like $71 at newegg, any
good? Radeon 9200 SE card as well. I think even the GF 4 MX 440 8x pci card
was rated better then the GF 5200 FX, is it?
Go to www.newegg.com and click on shop by category, then video cards at the
bottem. in the search pull down menues on the left, leave everything alone
except for slot type choose pci. what is the best gaming pci card here for
under like $100 or $80 that would do fine?

Working fine doesn't disqualify it from being a piece of shit.

Sony's desktops are normally trash, IMHO. They tend to use cheap parts to
make their machines.

I'm going to tell you that honestly it doesn't matter. As I said, the PCI
bus has a max speed of 133MB/sec, this is shared by all devices on the bus,
the hard drives, etc. As such, none of these cards are going to perform
outstanding. I'd go for the cheapest GF4 MX or higher card you can find.

sony does not use cheap parts. they use the sony dvd burner i told you about
which is a top rated burner, then asus for the motherboard. bla bla bla, far
from cheap. they use good quality parts.

Believe that if you want to. The fact Sony uses a Sony DVD burner and an
Asus motherboard makes no mention of their RAM choice, power supply choice,
or the quality of their workmanship. Grow up.

Don't worry about the guys knocking your box Diehard. Of course Sony makes a
good computer. They're all good man, as long as do what you want. Listen to
Demon and get the cheapest PCI card you can. The bandwidth of the PCI bus
will always be your bottle neck.

I'd get this one:
EVGA GeForce2 MX400 Video Card, 64MB DDR, 64-bit, PCI, Model
"064-P1-NV39-SX" -RETAIL
It goes for 43.00 bucks and will do ya. Forget about a directX 8 card, this
card will work fine till you get a rig with a AGP slot.

What games are you trying play? I just built a machine with a 32 MB GTS card
and it runs Need For Speed Underground, Secret Weapons over Normandy, Fifa
2004 and Call of Duty just fine. XP2000 CPU and 512 MB of DDR.
