Printer network problems after clean install of Vista from XP
Posted by strollingjj on November 17th, 2007

I have a Dell Dimension which I have just upgraded from XP to Vista with a
clean install.

All seems fine and I can use my HP Officejet 5610 printer. A new Vista
driver has been loaded to do this.

The problem is that I also have a Sony Vaio which connects through my home
wireless. The Sony is still on XP.

Whilst the Sony can connect to the network and can connect to the internet,
mail etc it cannot connect to the printer any more. I have enabled sharing
and said no to passwords etc and guess this is a driver issue - but am
unsure what to do.

Suggestion gratefully received.

Thanks.

According to HP's site, the 5610 is a USB connectivity printer, not a
network printer.

The topography of the LAN would presumably be wireless gateway with LAN
SonyXP & DellVista which DV's USB is connected to the HP.

To share a printer which is not network capable, the computer to which
the printer is connected is the 'route' by which the printer is shared.
HP describes that here
http://h71036.www7.hp.com/hho/cache/...0-225-121.html Set up to
share printers - Tip: You can typically only share the printing
functionality on an all-in-one printer. You cannot share the scanning,
faxing, or copying functions.

.... altho' that illustration and screenshots is for the computer
connected to the printer to be running XP instead of Vista

There are other printers which are network and wireless network capable,
and network allinones can share the printing, scanning, faxing, &
copying.

Thanks for the suggestion Mike - I have checked out the HP link as well.

I think the problem is that as the Dell is running Vista it can't install an
XP driver for the Sony to use when sharing.

There is the opportunity to load other drivers into Vista to enable other
systems to share - but these are just drivers for different chips and not
for different OS's. So it looks as though I'll have to manage as I am,
upgrade the Sony or get a new networked printer.

Thanks for your help.
