- Probably some sort of DNS problem.

Strange problem, I have.
About once a month, my web access and usenet access just dies...(not the
same time every month)
And won't "come back" until I've restarted the computer.
I can't seem to pinpoint why it happens.
About an hour ago it happened, and I had OE open with two IE windows.
Both were working fine, then wammo....unable to connect to news server and
unable to reach websites....
Email works though!
As mentioned, it all comes back after a reboot.
One thing I forgot to try is accessing a site via it's IP address....I'll
try that next time, if I remember!
Any ideas?
NAV and Ad-aware scans on a regular basis.
Cheers
EC.

Good idea with the IP address testing. It will help pinpoint the problem.
Have you tried to statically assign your DNS?
could be either a DNS issue, a router issue (if you're using one that
is), or an issue with your ISP.

It isn't really strange at all if this is Win95, 98, or ME. Perhaps
some OS info would help people help you.

Err, yes, of course.
Using WinXP...all critical updates applied.

Alright. Point taken. That is strange. XP is more stable than all of
the afforementioned.
Can you track the problem down to beginning after one of those critical
updates was installed? I run 2K and will say that I don't run every
single patch released because there are certain known issues that I've
had to recover from on my boxes. There are also known issues with some
of the XP patches....might want to look there first if anything rings a
bell.
Do you have your hosts file configured with anything specific? If so,
that may be causing a problem for you.
Do you have the machine configured to use DNS servers at all? If so,
maybe you need to try something more stable. A google for public DNS
servers might yield some good results.
The only other thing I can think of at the moment is something I found
at http://www.windows-help.net/WindowsXP/tune-24.html . It may be a
nugget of decent info for you.
Hope you figure out what's causing the annoyance,

Hi
Thanks for your help.
Not sure what you mean by "Do you have your hosts file configured with
anything specific? If so,
that may be causing a problem for you."
Seeing as this is a little over my head, I think the obvious (and probable)
answer is "No".
With regard to the Win updates, I'm not sure. I'm sure I had a similar
problem about a year ago, and now it's happened three times in the last 3 or
so months.
I'll certainly try that DNS flushing thingy when it happens again.
Is it a DNS problem, though? This is my untrained idea...but do web browsing
and usenet work differently to POP email?
Anyways, thanks for helping.
