Can someone please suggest how I can fix a problem with Microsoft XP home
edition updating? I have once again let my daughter log on to her friends
using MSN Messenger 7.5, and again I am having trouble with the computer, it
is not automatically downloading updates. I tried to update manually and it
isn't even allowing this and all I am getting is a failed message. Can
someone help me solve this? Yes I know what you at first are thinking, KEEP
MY DAUGHTER OFF THE COMPUTER? I removed some spyware with S&D but still I
can't update, any suggestions? One more thing, my spell checker is not
working when I send mail anymore, any ideas on fixing it? I have the
settings set to check all mail but it's still not checking the spelling, I
just get a pop-up saying; "An error occurred while the spelling was being
checked" and when sending any mail "The spell check on this document was
halted do you want to send it anyway?". I am using Outlook Express for my
mail. As always, thanks for any help.

[We're going to call this problem #1]
I think the last time this came around, someone suggested the process may be
quicker and easier to just do a complete reformat and reinstall of your OS.
In the time it's taken me to compose this, I could have reimaged my entire
drive, defragged and re-updated to where I am now. But, alas, I guess
discussing backup strategy might be putting the horse in front of the cart at
this this juncture on the time-space continuum...
Run complete AV and malware scans, and do it until you're clean.
Windows update uses ActiveX controls. Which IE you are using is relevant
here. I would recommend that you right-click on the desktop IE icon >
Properties > Advanced tab; restore and reset to default all around;
Security tab; highlight/select "Internet icon" and reset all to default
level; then, highlight/select "Trusted sites" icon > Sites button > Add
button, and add http://update.microsoft.com - then *un-check* (for now)
"Require server verification (https
..." > Privacy tab; "Medium"; then Apply
and OK out of there.
[This can be Problem #2]
Verify that you have run complete AV and malware scans, and that all is OK.
[Problem #1]
Close out your IE, right-click on desktop IE icon > Properties > General tab
[Problem #2]
No. That's not what anyone who was ever a kid [or a parent] would be thinking
at all. Youth is about making mistakes and surviving them with the help of
rational, sane and loving parents.
[Problem #3]
Keep scanning, cleaning, rebooting and scanning until you're all clean.
[Problem #4]
OE uses many M$ Word type programs for it's default spellchecker. All
settings being correct in OE, and if you have recently uninstalled [etc.]
Word, Office, Works, or they have become corrupted, or the like, it would
render your past OE spellchecking capablities NFG. Here is a small but
effective - and *free* dedicated Spell Checker for OE:

Easy, greasy and badda-bing on that.
[Not a Problem...]
However, remind me to never ask you to "beam us up."
My parents always said "Our children keep us young." Let us know what you
think about that after a while... (o;
Best wishes to all for a safe and joyous holiday season.

He was a spy, all right! And he knew that everybody knew it...
He'd walk into a room and people would go "Hey, who is that guy, a spy?"
He'd laugh to himself, maybe pull out his gun and show it to the people,
to kind of impress them - but *not* to show off.
Sometimes spying was dirty work.
Sometimes he'd kill a guy, then paint a clown face on his face.
Nobody said he had to do that, but he did it anyway.
So, dirty work *can* be entertaining and educational!
