psychotic desktop icons
Posted by justin tyme on November 16th, 2007

Hello experts:

Over the last 2 days when I bring the computer out of standby (XP s2), and
click on a desktop icon shortcut, instead of just that one getting
highlighted and taking me to the program it is a shortcut for, 4 or 5 icons
all light up and they all freeze. A couple of times Explorer then shows up
on the screen in cascading windows for each highlighted program. At that
point the whole computer is frozen and I have to do a cold reboot. Usually
this reboot cleans everything up - but not always. Sometimes it takes a 2nd
try. Yes, I have run multiple antivirus (Norton 2007) checks, multiple
antispywear checks. Nothing showed up. All have the most current
definitions. No new programs have been added, nor new hardware. I fear for
the life of this machine!

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

justin

Try System Restore - go to a date prior to the problem.

There are subtle but distinct differences between shutdown, restart
and standby. With a full shutdown, on reboot full checks take place
such as for improperly installed drivers, network glitches etc that
won't happen with a restart and certainly not if waking from standby.
Also, in standby, being a power saving mode, if you left open aps
and/or documents when going into standby, power saving leaves the
bare minimum of power to volitile memory, this could be a problem,
the answer being close all open apps and docs before going into SB
but that defeats the purpose. But then your prob could be a registry
error?

A "clean" install is needed from time to time.. If one
does not have a backup drive, better keep one ready.
Realistically, in my opinion, fixing everything that
goes wrong such as viruses, spyware, bad software
can only be fixed by reinstalling from the get-go.
However, will wish you luck if you want to try
some other way.. However, shutdowns, hibernating,
etc. are not perfect in Windows..I don't play with
them..Best of luck

No, it is not. Not even for Windows.

I've a 1998 PIII here on my desk running its initial installation of
Windows 2000, and it still does not need a "clean" install. It's been
acting as my local web server (among other things) since new.
