I have media player v10. Can't play several video types. Any advice on
Codecs; are they downloaded from Microsoft or is there a better solution?

There are alternatives.
D\load `Gspot` (free) from
www.headbands.com/gspot/
and test the video files to see what codecs are needed to play them.
It will then be easy to find the codecs you need by going to:
www.google.co.uk and finding the correct ones.
