Re: need to copy in dos with long filename support

Using windows 2000,
Drive was a external usb that lost power while hooked up looks like part of
the file system got corrupted windows freezes up if I try to attach the
drive even through ide and scandisk will not work on the drive either.
Can acess/copy files if boot in dos mode(usine win95 boot disk) fine but the
lack of long filename support is causing a problem.
I've tried a couple of utilites but I can't seem to find anything that
works. Does anyone know of a utility that will either fix it or just an
easy way to include the long filename support when I copy over.

Thanks

thanks for the response but I looked at that utility too, if you can only
boot in dos mode you have to use the 16bit version which does not have long
filename support.

Wow - that's weird - Windows locking on trying to boot with that drive
installed. Have you tried different master/slave settings, putting it on the
CD bus, etc.? Do you have access to another (non W2K) system to put this in?
If you are using DOS mode to view files, I'm going to assume it's FAT32, not
NTFS. So you might try it in a Win9x system, or an XP system.

Your post seemed to indicate Scandisk didn't run from Windows when it was
mounted on the internal IDE bus. Did you attempt to run Scandisk from your
Win95 boot disk?

I know what you mean about the long filename issue...it's ticked me off a
few times too.

hmm I should have come back and checked that before doing it my way. I did
find a dos program (LDOS utility1.01) that kept long filenames so with the
exception of some files that just were too corrupted I managed to get
everything back and formating fixed the freezing issue. I was trying from a
win98 cd to do scandisk but it was stalling on my c: drive. Since I was
doing it at 12:00 in the morning switching the ide never occurred to me.
Your way might have saved me a couple of hours copying each folder. Oh well
at least I don't have a couple of hundred files listed as thisfil~1
Thanks for the tips I'll try and remember that if it happens again
(Hopefully not : )

Let me suggest that you use a file compressor that is compatible with
LongFile Names.
My choice would be ARJ271.
Also PKZIP has a version that is compatible with LFN's.

You can create a *.ARJ file that has your files of interest, from the
Source Drive, and preserves the LFN's.

After you successfully create that *.ARJ file then you can decompress
it onto your Target Drive.

The whole operation would be done under DOS.

Cheers,
