Someone related a sorta similar story, and that fixed it. You don't
mention the brand, not that it's *real* important.

IDE controller(s) (or controller cards) going goofy? Are they on a
separate card? Are the cables *tight*. I think I toasted/crapped up, a
plain cd-rom because of a sub-standard cable. It just didn't grab all the
pins, I think.

I had problems with it reading burned discs. But had no problems with
them in (even) older cd-roms. Oh well.
