- Recognizing / Not Recognizing the Disk Drives

On bootup Windows ME reconfigures, if necessary, its attached disk drives.
I have a Presario 5008US with CD and CD-R drives. At apparently random
intervals my system boot reconfigures to either recognize or not recognize
the drives. When recognized the work fine, otherwise the system doesn't
know they are there. I haven't opened up the machine to check the cable,
but movement of the case is irrelevany.
Can this be something other than a loose cable?

Sounds like a dieing hard drive. I would suggest backing up your data and
purchasing a new hard drive.
Prashant.
