"Redirecting" the My Documents folder?
Posted by finkle@fingeroffate.bad on February 23rd, 2005

I recently added a second hard drive to my configuration, and am trying
to keep programs on the (smaller) C: drive, and data on the (larger) D:
drive.

In Windows 2000, the special My Documents system folder on the C: drive
shows up on my desktop and in tree views of the system in Windows
Explorer. However, most of my actual documents are in a folder on the
D: drive (which, for better or worse, I have named My Documents also).

Right now, I have a desktop shortcut for this D: My Documents folder.
But it would be a slight improvement if I could have the "special" icon
for C: My Documents open the D: My Documents when I click on it (sorry
if this is confusing).

Is there a way to somehow modify the desktop icon for the C: My
Documents, so it instead opens a different folder?

On your desktop, on My Documents, do a left mouse key-click, and select
Properties. Look for the label that indicates for Move. Click on Move, and
then brows to where you would like it moved.

It is also possible for you to make a shortcut on your desktop to the
documents folder that is on your other drive. You should name it something
like D-Documents or something like that in order to avoid confusion. First
do the same for the one on your drive D.

I cannot remember where it is in MS Word, but there is a setup where you can
change the default place that it will save your files. You will have to
research this out. There are various techniques to accomplish this.

Right click on the 'real' My Documents icon, and select Properties. You can
move the My Documents from C:\doc...\My Documents to D:\My Documents. In XP
it even moves the existing docs from the old to the new location, it may do
the same in W2K.
