Windows Media Player 10 stopped working shortly after installing a set of
ASPI drivers that I may or may not have needed for a new Plextor CD-R/W .
DVD-R/W. (Goldenhawk Techs. CDRWin stated no CD ROM recording device was
found on the SCSI or IDE bus).<<snip myself here>>
Normally I would run towards Sysytem Restore. A normally simple click churns
the hd for a few seconds followed by nothing. An equally normal click on
Help and Support yields the same result. Assuming somebody had changed Admin
settings, a look into User Accounts opens the user accounts window, no users
appear. There is a back and forward button, & empty shell.
At one point Search was attempted from an explorer window by a user using
XP's cutsie non-classic interface. The Pane opens empty, no search dialog,
look in folder field, date modified field, etc. Interestingly, user in
classic mode has full search capability.
At one point at while at
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;302796 attempt was
made to print the page which yields a redirect do to "Javascript is not
enabled" http://support.microsoft.com/gp/noscript/
F8 hasn't booted to safe mode yet, (returns a keybord error?) but F5 can get
there as a choice. No luck with System Restore or Help there...
From Microsoft support an effort was made to run Restore from the run line,
to no avail. Services for both Help & Restore are started with OS and
running.
To this point, I have tried System Mechanic to fix the Registry and
attempted to boot to "Last Good Known Configuration"
Can the Reg be rolled back to a earlier state, consider throwing in the OEM
Reinstallation CD?
Ran Dell's lousy diagnostic CD, basically it looks like all the Hardware is
fine.
Points - Empty User Accounts Shell
Empty Search Pane (for non classic accounts)
No Help & Support launch
No System Restore launch
Javascript may not be working
Haven't been able to print anything on a laser printer on LPT1
Safe mode hasn't solved anything
Interestingly, the kids have found that Roxio Easy CD Creator will play
files with it's preview. I suppose it's engine is not dependent on Media
Player...?
