- REQ : HD Transfer Help Please
- Posted by Hoaxy on February 10th, 2008
Good afternoon all,
My PC died on thursday and have finally bought myslef a brand new machine
(saves me fiddling to much with it)
In my old PC i had two IDE HD's, formatted with the NTFS File System using
Win XP.
My new PC has 1 SATA drive running vista home premuim.
Is it possible to transfer the old data on the HD to my new one relatively
painlessly, I would have connected the old one too it but its been killed to
death!
Any help would be greatly appreciated,
Haoxy

If you are able to open your new PC (some are sealed for warranty purposes)
then either:
a) use the ide cable from your old PC and plug the old drive into the new
PC's IDE and spare power lead and copy by drag and drop.
b) if your optical drive in the new PC is IDE, just borrow those
connections & copy from ...to.
Alternatively as Richard suggests or if you don't want to open the new PC
up, go buy a USB external hard drive case.
By installing your old hard drives into this case you can simply drag and
drop without any potential 'oops' screwdriver moments.
Best of all once you are satisfied you have rescued all your old data you
can leave the biggest of your old hard drives in the USB case, format it to
clear out the old folders and files, then reuse it as a backup device.
Best
Paul.

Richard & Paul,
Many thanks for your help!
I have purchased two USB cases and planted the two drives in but can't get
vista to recognise them! The installation cd is less than useless
I am going to look on the HD suppliers website to check jumper settings etc
and see what that comes up with
Many thanks again,
Hoaxy
