Req; Problem with playing CDs I have burned (PLEASE help)

I have back up my registry faithfully, now I have a question. I have
apparently deleted a reg file ( or something) for playing CDs I have
burned, it happened once before and I used sys. restore and fixed it,
but if I do that I will lose all programs installed after the restore
point, and depending on how far back I have to go that could be a lot
programs. Question is if I restore using my registry backups does that
just add the reg files my machine needs or add the ones not in
registry or will it do like sys. restore and I will lose programs?

I am running a Hp machine with 1000 gigs of ram, an NVidia g force 4,
120 megs of memory, a turtle beach sound card and Xp home. I have read
most everything I can on the web (thank you to mike for his input) but
I just don't understand if I use a older version of my registry bak.
if it will delete all the programs I have installed after entering the
reg. bak.
Thanks for the help !
