Router Problems
Posted by Nothing Entered on September 15th, 2003

I have experienced a weird networking problem! I was hooking up a network
for a friend, who just subscribed to Comcast Cable modem. They had 4
computers that they wish to share the internet connection with. So, I went
out and bought a Belkin 4 port router for them. Everything worked great..
good speeds, everyone could use it at once, and I was happy. However, for
NO apparent reason, the computers (all at the same time), will drop their
internet connection. So, I sit down on the computers, and try to ping the
router 192.168.2.1, but "Request Timed out". Links lights are all still on,
and according to the modem, WAN activity is still active. If you go and
reboot the router, everything comes back up, internet works, you can ping
the router. I thought it might be because the Router was doing DHCP, and
something was wrong with the leasing time of IPS. However the leasing time
is set to forever, so renewal should not be a problem, and I even put in
static non-routable ips, on 2 of the computers, and they are having trouble
also. Any help would greatly be appreciated!

with the static IP's installed, can you ping between PC's
?...sounds like the router may be giving up the ghost ;-)

Sounds like you answered your own question. Change out the router.

And the amount of time after a reboot of the router is until it fails?

Internet only?

The link lights are for hardware not software. There could be PC OS
faults, router DHCP faults , firewall blocking etc but the link lights
still are on. The link LED, shows only the basic function of the
transceiver, power and cable is okay.

My Netgear RT314 used to do this.

Yep..... that's it never found a cause and it's not happened for over a
year.

Did ipconfig or equivalent show any problems with the lease times?

From the DHCP range or outside of it.

On my RT314 I changed the DHCP to 10 IPs and execpt for 2 PCs (DHCP) the
rest is static.

Trouble seeing the router or each other, you didn't say exactly, just
used 'also'.

Could be firewall software on PCs blocking the DHCP renew test and it
eventually expires, had that once.

If anyone has this problem, here is the solution according to Belkin
technical support:

1) Make sure all NICS are set to 10Base with 1/2 duplex.
2) Download version 1.000.000 Firmware (EVEN IF THAT IS INSTALLED ON THE
ROUTER), and reflash. Power cycle, and then reconfigure the router.

1. Update firware.
2. If its using USB to connect to the modem, don't. Get a ethernet wired
modem and router.
