Router problems
Posted by Edward Principe on March 5th, 2004

I just got Road Runner... I got 2 computers... One is running Windows 2000
Advanced Server... It has a web server that is IIS (Internet Information
Server)....

The cable company gave me a cable modem that has a router built into it... I
want to route web traffic to my Windows 2000 Server... I went to
Security->Allow... I typed in port 80, but if I access it from the Internet
it times out.... If I access it from the internal IP address; the web pages
come up...

I eventually want to move to Linux, 'cause I can get more up to date
software for a cheap price... But I want to get it to work for Windows,
'cause I'm more familer with Windows...

I called support, and he said it isn't routing right... But how do I fix
that? The cable company gave me the modem/router that's name Toshiba
PCX2000...

Oh, yeah; I'm setting up the site to develop video games... If your a
graphics artist, e-mail me at eprincipe@neo.rr.com...

Have they changed your ip as of late they have been using proxy servers?
Do you have dns set for your ip?
Try dyndns.org if not

I'm using a program to get the Dynamic IP address (www.my-domain.us)... I
even typed the IP address from the Internet that's assigned to the cable
modem... Still didn't come up.... I think it's a router problem, but I'm new
to this stuff...

What's that supposed to do? Why did you do it? Where did you set
this?

That's a crock. See below.

There's your problem: according to the manual at
http://www.toshiba.com/taisnpd/produ...000_manual.pdf, this is
not a router, and doesn't do port forwarding. It's just a modem, and
shouldn't HAVE to do port forwarding. I have no idea what you've done
and how you've set things up, but this PCX2000 plugs directly in to a
computer via USB or network patch cable, and that computer is directly
on the internet. You should have no problem accessing a web server on
that computer from the internet.
