- Scan disk and defrag freezing up...
- Posted by Graham Webster on August 24th, 2003
Hi,
I'm running Windows ME, with AVG Version 7.0 and ZoneAlarm Pro (trial
version). Today I ran scan disk (last time was around 9 days ago, however it
froze up before it even started, same thing happened with defrag, I also
tried maintenance wizard... the disk clean-up worked but the scan disk froze
up.
AVG did find "trojan horse downloader small" about a week ago. As AVG
couldn't seem to get rid of this I was told this would work.... which it
did. "If you are running ME. Right click 'My Computer' click on
'Properties' 'Performance' 'File system' 'Troubleshooting' and check
'Disable restore' do a virus scan and when completed go back to
'Troubleshooting' to Enable 'Restore'"
I just wondered if that may be the problem with my scan disk, defrag
troubles.
Thanks for any advice/help.
Regards,
Graham.

Thanks Mike.
I did look at the first couple of links and it mentions about disk defrag
having trouble while it's running, both my scan disk and disk defrag don't
even get chance to start, as they freeze up before they do.
Again thanks for the helpful links....
Graham.

Try Safe mode and see if that helps.

I've followed everything from the link above apart from #4.... After
restarting in safe mode, scan disk/defrag works. I'm just wondering now how
I can get it to work again on my normal log on desktop.
Thanks again!

Defrag in Safe Mode.

"So, Mr Slumpy you *really* are the perpetual comedian, aren't you ?" I
threw back my head and roared with laughter as Graham Webster continued:
Waaaaaaaah!!!!
Not surprised Defrag won't work.
Do it in Safe Mode, then at least it's guaranteed to work.
