Screen Flicker
Posted by Pat on April 1st, 2005

For the last few weeks my screen has had a very slight flicker. It only
happens occasionally (maybe once or twice a week) and doesn't last very long
(just a few minutes). Most of the time it's fine. Anyone got any ideas why
this should happen and why it comes and goes.

Be happy to help, but perhaps you could give some relevant info like kind of
monitor, size, age, condition, video card, computer, op system, nature of
your electrical supply, UPS/surge protection, location of computer (home,
factory), major electrical equipment at that location, etc.

Is there a cell phone close by at the times it happens?

That's a good point. I hadn't thought of that. There is usually a cell phone
within a few feet of the PC, but it is there all the while, where as the
flicker only comes and goes. I would have thought it would only affect the
pc if the cell phone rang anyway.

Not necessarily, the phone "talks" to the server frequently.

Try making sure that your monitor connector cable, and the power cable are
secure. You can also try jiggling the connector cable at each end to see if
it is intermittent.

If you can find a loaner monitor to use for while, this will be a sure way
to determine where the fault is.

Sometimes LCD monitors may start to flicker if the screen lamp ballast
transformer, or the screen lamps start to fail. If the monitor has a number
of years on it, this is very possible. In these monitors, the lamps or their
ballast may fail before any of the other electronics does.

That will do it - the phone gets random bursts of information (updates, time

I have been around a lot of equipment in my time, and have never seen a cell
phone cause interference with a computer monitor. I have seen wireless
networks, and other communications devices interfere with cell phones, but
never a computer or standard video monitor be interfered with by a cell
phone, or other types of communications devices.

An exception to this would be a TV set that is using an RF input connection,
such as for its tuner. Then it is possible to have RF interference. This is
another matter.

Your computer monitor uses a direct base-band, digital, or video drives to
it. There are no RF circuits inside of it that are exposed to outside
signals.

it's at least possible you're seeing signal leak/crosstalk from
something nearby. is the monitor cable bundled with any other electric
cable? if so, move it. in later models -- from Dell, anyway -- the
cable comes with a 'choke' (filter) at each end, near the connector. on
mine, they're cylindrical. if yours doesn't have this, then try to
borrow one that does, see what effect this has.

in this, do you refer to the 0.583 years mentioned earlier, or to

I have... and it sounds like exactly what the OP mentioned - happens in
intervals and only for a short duration each time.

Can't hurt to try moving the cell away from the monitor.

Thanks a lot to everyone for there input. Screen is ok again now, but will
try some of the suggestions the next time it flickers. Which may not be for
another few days or a week or more. Was just curious to know if it could
have been anything in particular. Thanks again all.
