Hi,
Just started playing around with web site designing. Is there any easy,
cheap or free ways of getting a good ranking with search engines? Or be
pointed in the right direction.

Do a Google search for website submission software and or websites,this
will allow you to at least submit your site to some of the bigger search
engines free of cost, avoid any that ask for payment. Do not submit your
site more than once with any search engine lest you anger them and not
get listed at all.
A site generally ranks higher when there are other sites linked to it so
depending on the type of site your building you can explore options there
by joining a webring for instance.
Many of the sites you'll find with your Google search will have other
tips to help you, but again do not get scammed into paying for anything,
it is only a major waste of money.
