Setup MSN Shorcut problem and IE problem
Posted by Vic on May 11th, 2004

I have a Windows 98 Second Edition system that has a couple of problems I
wanted to see what you all thought.

1 - When I try and install Internet Explorer the setup tells me that a
previous installation hasn't completed and windows needs to be restarted.
Well I have restarted it and it keeps doing the same thing. Any ideas?

2 - On the desktop there is a Setup MSN Internet Access shortcut. Normally I
just drag it to the recycle bin and it goes away. When I try to that here it
the no symbol (circle with a slash thru it) just appears and won't let me
delete it. The shortcut works fine and if I try to right click on it says
that the properties for this device is not available. Any ideas?

Vic scrawled:

Open your registry editor (Start / Run / regedit) to the
following key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Session Manager

In the right-hand pane, select PendingFileRenameOperations and delete it.

Check for an MSN entry in the desktop namespace, in the registry.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Explorer\Desktop\NameSpace\

The MSN CLSID is {00028B00-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}

If found under "NameSpace", delete it.
