Normally Windows XP is a very stable operating system. There can be many
reasons for this. You may have had a power glitch, there may be a software
installed that was running in the background that may have some problems, or
there may be an adware or spyware that got picked up from the net. These are
just a few very simple reasons. There can be many more.

If the problem persists to repeat itself, then you would have to start
investigating it properly. One of the first approaches is to disable various
programs and drivers that are loaded when the machine starts. It is
important to make sure that a vital program or driver for the operation of
Windows is not disabled, or the machine may not start at all.

When installing devices with XP, it is important to make sure that the
drivers with these devices are recommended for XP. Non XP drivers can cause
problems with XP. Some can non compatible drivers, can give the symptom that
you are describing.

There are some drivers that are written for XP, that are approved, but will
not show as such, because your release date of your XP copy is older than
the creation date of the drivers. You must verify everything about the
device drivers that you want to install, that they are compatible with XP,
if there is nothing written in any of the instructions that came with the
device.
