Simple FTP program
Posted by Trent SC on December 10th, 2004

I need to set up a fairly non-technical user with the ability to upload some
PDF files to a webspace. Can anyone recommend a straightforward (Ideally
free) application which doesn't require too much brain power?

My ideal scenario would be a simple set of keystrokes from following a short
set of printed instructions which I'd give them.

TIA

Good point. Is there a simple step-by-step guide to FTP'ing with IE?

The Internet explorer ftp won't be of any use to you. Do a Google for "FTP
Explorer" It's free and just about the simplest that I have found.

Using IE to access the ftp site appeared to work when I just tried it out.
Sorry to appear dense, but why wouldn't it work?

Because you can't upload.

Er, just uploaded a test file using IE6. So thanks for your input but if
that's your only objection to IE, it doesn't seem to apply in this
situation.

Try to upload a web page to your ISP and report back here.

OK, and are then happily viewable. What were you expecting to happen, and
more importantly, if this isn't what you were expecting, what am I doing
that you aren't able to?

No conflict here, just curious and anxious to get it right so I can pass the
instructions on to someone else.

When I enter the ftp address for my ISP in the IE address box and click on
go I receive an error message telling me that "The server name or address
could not be resolved"

Why would you enter the ftp address of your ISP? They certainly aren't
going to let you in!

You want to enter the ftp address for your website.

I prefer ACE FTP3 (freeware) but I can ftp to my websites via IE by typing;
ftp://ftp.mydomain.com and hitting enter. I am then presented with a
username and password log-on box. Fill in the appropriate info and ftp to
my hearts content.

You *have* it right. Carry on.

I don't have my own domain. Where would I find the ftp address of my
website?

Thanks for the reassurance. For the purposes of a
not-very-computer-literate secretary in a small building office, FTP'ing
with IE6 will be just fine. The instructions are short, simple and even my
Mum could follow them.

Ta muchly.

I've looked. I can only find the ftp address of my server, not the ftp
address of my web site.

Then call support and ask them. It may be that this only works where there
is domain hosting rather than an ISP's shared hosting (although I might be
talking bollocks - it happens a lot).

You have to get in there and root around - they don't leave good little

http://www.ntlworld.com/help/custome.../settings.html

webspace - ftp details

Customer homepage URL format: homepage.ntlworld.com/user.name
FTP Server upload.ntlworld.com
User Name = your username
Password = your password

Another strategy is to go somewhere else where some service is giving
someone instructions, like these people who are selling webspace and
domainnames and such, but they have some pretty good help information
http://www.netfirms.com/

But you can't just stick your face in the front door; you have to be
able to drill all around the site.

My provider EarthLink has some exposed tutorials as well.

Whatever works. :-) Still? As far as "idiot-proof" goes? AceFTP3 is free,
supports drag-and-drop, and is even simpler than using IE (IMO)
