- Small business network
- Posted by Alan on January 3rd, 2004
I am about to open a small business office, with 6 people working in it.
The staff will all have internet access and will connect via a 24 port
switch. We will all use MS Office and have email with Outlook as the mail
client.
I think - but am not yet sure - that I want to have a shared area on the
network for an intranet and also some limited file sharing.
Do I need to buy a server for this to work, or can I add another PC in a
peer to peer arrangement off the switch
Any advice or direction elsewhere would be very welcome.
TIA

10 workstations is the magic number for peer to peer. If you go over 10 you
need a server based network. So, if that is in your plans in the next year
or two, you may as well get it setup and learn how to operate it. If your
plans are to stand pat for several years, go with the peer to peer. Peer to
peer is the least expensive and works quite well for a small number of
workstations.
