Something wrong with CD drive
Posted by KL on February 19th, 2005

Hello,

If somebody could help me, that would be great.

My CD drive has been wonky since I shipped it across the country. I don't
know if damage was done to it, or if its my computer. I can play audio CDs
on it, no problem, I also installed my printer and mouse using CDs, but when
I try to burn anything, I get a "SCSI/ATAPI command timeout error". It has
a funny clicking sound that occurs after it the CD starts to spin.

Recently I tried to upgrade to windows XP, but it makes funny sounds like
its starting up, then it slows down again repeatedly and frequently. After
about on 1/2 hour into the installation, i got a message on my screen saying
that the medium had been disconnected. So I restarted my computer and my CD
drive was reconnected.

I guess my major question is, is it my CD drive thats broken? or something
in my computer? and how can it be fixed?

Thanks!

And you of course checked the cable to make sure it somehow
didn't come loose while being shipped across country...???? Right...

You're probably going to need to replace that drive. I find that CD drives
are one of the items I replace most frequently. Fortunately, they're quite
inexpensive now. I think I paid less than $30 (including shipping) last time
I bought a CD rewritable drive.

In addition to the previous advice, you could go into Device Manager, remove
the driver for the device, then restart and allow Windows to reinstall it.
Possible that the driver just got a bit corrupted...just a thought...luck...

Well, loose data or power cable can cause such. Or, the move across the
country may have indeed toasted the drive. Back in 1994 I was involved
with a small company that shipped
new pcs anywhere in north/south america. We used to test our packing
with the _UPS Test_ ie we'd pack a pc in a box with the packing
material, find a loading dock behind a warehouse, and drop the box to
the lot off the dock to the ground half a dozen times and then take it
back and see what happened. Yes it was an extreme test. Sometimes the
cpu fan would get dislodged or even be knocked off. Sometimes the cdrom
drive would act weird afterwards. I suppose the fiber optic assembly was
quite sensitive.

In our 'UPS test', we included backing a truck over the item after the 'dock
drop'...bear in mind, not computers, I'm in the printing business...<g>

I checked the three cables plugging into the drive, I'm not sure if there
are any other cables too be checked...
