Sound Card problems - Tiny Home Studio computer
Posted by Steve on May 22nd, 2005

Machine: Tiny Home Studio PIII 450
Windows 98.

My computer suddenly stopped playing any kind of sound. Norton system works
tells me there is no sound card present. The card is Creative Sound Blaster
Audio PCI 64v. Could it have gone faulty? A friend says it might be disabled
in BIOS but I haven't a clue how to check it and get it working or to verify
if it has packed up. Any help/advice gratefully received.

Steve spewed forth...

First, you typically don't enable/disable sound cards in the BIOS. The one
way the BIOS may be involved is if your motherboard has on-board audio and
it has somehow become enabled thus conflicting with your sound card. But I
wouldn't go there first.

Check your device manager, is the sound card listed? If it is, is there a
red X or a yellow exclamation point by it? If so, you will need to
reinstall the sound card drivers. You can either reinstall these from the
CD/Disks that came with your sound card OR you can d/l them from the
Creative web site. The latter would ensure that you have the latest
drivers. Make sure you choose the drivers for Win98.

That's a good place to start. Report back here with the outcome.

You might open up the case and remove, then reseat the sound card;
boot up and see what happens.
