is this spam for real!?
Posted by mike on February 24th, 2007

I found this spam and it comes with a diagram of a small box of electrics
and a probe. It's quite a weird ad, if you go to the website it turns out
to be a genuine firm connected to cleaning things and generally killing
bugs. Can it be a joke designed to attract punters or are they really
trying to tell people that a uv probe inserted in a body cavity prior to sex
is as good as a condom. Sorry 'bout the big bold writting, I cut and pasted
the article and don't know how to alter the type. I guess it's also bit OT
but then it is a technical question of a sort.

X-Newsreader: Microsoft Outlook Express 6.00.2900.3028

The place you /start/ inspecting a spam or any other unsolicited mail as
to its 'character' is by examining the headers, not by opening the spam
insecurely and not by click-visiting its spamvertised website
insecurely.

Your newsreader is OE, which is likely your mailuser agent, so your
rendering engine is IE, presumably IE6 with Win XP SP2. There are a
number of insecurities which that operating system, browser, and mail
agent have which makes insecure spamhandling and insecure website
clicking to be a potentially dangerous activity.

Viewing that website 'properly' requires you to have 'some' scripts
enabled, which is potentially dangerous. I have no way of knowing just
how insecurely you have your likely mailuser agent and insecure browser
and insecure OS configured.

The first goal of a spammer is to get the spam into your Inbox so that
you will see its subject. Done. The next goal is to get you to open
the spam to see what is inside, for whatever reason; because the
subject 'motivates' you to see what is inside instead of deleting it
unopened and unread. Done.

Once the spam has arrived in your inbox, has not been deleted unopened,
but now has been opened and read, the next helpful step to the spammer
who is being very successful so far in this example, is to get you to go
to the website so that the webpage can start 'working' your browser's
insecurities. Done.

You are a spammee and also a spamreading spamvertised website clicking
spammee. Doing all of that insecurely is wonderful for spammers.
That's what makes their world go 'round.

That is a Spam letter that is going around.

As for UV radiation, especially in the medium-wave and short-wave (UV-B, and
UV-C) region, it will kill bacteria, and fungus spores. Long-wave (UV-A) in
a high enough intensity is also dangerous. The rate of destruction depends
on the intensity and distance. The effect of the intensity works by the
inverse square law factor.

Many displays and nightclubs are using UV-A lamps, also known as,
"black-ray" lamps for causing the starch and dies in clothing and some types
of facial makeup to fluoresce. UV-A rays at high enough intensities can also
be dangerous to look in to and be exposed to. For some reason there are
myths going around that UV-A is not dangerous. This fact is not true.

As for exposing living tissue to UV radiation that can destroy bacteria's,
this must be done under very controlled conditions. UV radiation can cause
burns, skin cell damage, and can also lead to forming cancer.

It is recommended to avoid any type of UV exposure to living tissue of any
kind.

You want to talk about a spam and a spamvertised site because you like
to open spam and you like to go to spamsites curiously. You are not
treating your spam properly by aiding spammers and I'm telling you so,
whether you asked me whether I like for you to help spammers or not.

There's no indication that you can handle spam securely, and every
