Spyware Question
Posted by Harvey Gratt on July 4th, 2004

A friend has win xp home with 4 users, one of which is the
administrator. If we run spyware removal programs (i.e., spybot,
ad-aware), is it sufficient to only run it from the account which is the
admistrator? Or, do these programs need to be run in each individual
accounts (i.e., does each account have its own registry, etc.)?

Thanks,
Harvey

Probably should be OK if the application is set up to run
under "all users". That is probably the way the program will
install.

It is necessary to run spyware/malware removers
from EACH user account, to be sure that any
registry entries placed in the specific user hives
are removed -- yes, each account has it's own
user "portion" of the registry, or registry hive.

Out of curiosity, is there just one registry which keeps track of all
the individual users and their associated environments (i.e, security
access, installed programs, etc.)? If so, if a virus or malware program
gets in on one user account, can it infect all the others?

Thanks,
Harvey

Thanks. I believe that answers my concerns.

Major cleaning under admin, with the machine set to "Display All
Files".

Reclean under each user, to get rid of stuff in HKEY_CURRENT_USER
(which is by user, naturally).
