suggestions re new laptop?
Posted by JeffK on February 5th, 2005

I want to buy a laptop suitable for multimedia authoring/image manipulation
etc. it'll also be instead of a normal PC when at home.

I have some ideas about what hardware configuration I need, but I don't know
exactly, so any suggestions welcome. One thing I've been told is that as a
replacement for a PC I should go for a Pentium 4 (minimum 3GHz), but if I
need portability and desktop style performance go with M Processor (minimum
1.5 GHz.) can anyone explain this to me?

Also, anyone got any ideas about which are the better builds of laptops? one
guy told me IBM aren't well built, someone else said ACER are good - any
other comments/recommendations? (explanations would be useful!)

Any (relevant) ideas/suggestions welcomed.

TIA, Jeff

If you want to do multimedia on it you should go for a good
screensize, and widescreen is a nice feature. So 15,4 widescreen is a
minimum. And stay away from those shared RAM things, get one with a
decent graphicscard. Some multimedia software are like little children
in a candystore when it comes to RAM. They can never get enough. So
512 Mb is minimun and 1024 is better, but it will cost. Then you have
to look at the harddisk speed. Laptop hardisks are usually slower than
disks in desktops but there are differences. As to make and model:
Well, its al CPUs from either Intel or AMD, disks come from Maxtor or
some other, proabably the screens are made the same place as well. HP
has nice support (from what I know in Denmark) and nice recovery and
reinstall features wich make it easy to reinstall, so has Asus. Prob
with recovery CD's are, that you only get a Windows LE, meening that
if you want to install ekstra Windows components from the CD, that is
not possible, because you don't have any.
I'd say go for P4 3,2 Ghz 533 Mhz fsb, the Centrinos i've seen have a
slower fsb, only 400 Mhz.

True - and most other PCs that aren't running the Centrino package already
include wireless NICs anyway.
