- Suse Linux 9.1 Boot problem.
- Posted by berksposter on June 30th, 2004
Hi, I've just installed Suse Linux 9.1 onto my Win Xp comp for a dual boot
system.
It has a 60gb hdd partitioned c: 40gb d:10gb and 10gb to a linux partition
(using partitionmagic 8)
It installed fine, but it wont boot into windows from the grub bootloader,
Linux is the default and it boots into that fine.
When I try to boot to windows (the second option) I get the error;
root (hd0.0)
filesystem type unknown, partition type 0x7
chainloader +1
How can I fix the bootloader? The windows files are still there, the windows
partitions and files are visible/accesible in linux.
If I cant fix the bootloader, I seem to remember there is a way to fix an XP
boot problem using the XP installation disk, how do I do this? I dont care
if it messes up the linux installation, I will remove it anyway if I cant
fix the grub boot problem.
TIA,
BP

With Partition Magic usually what I do is use Boot Magic in
the MBR and install grub into the Linux boot partition instead
of the MBR. I don't know about Suse, but in Redhat type Linux
they usually save the MBR someplace when installing a boot loader
so you can put it back if there's a problem. I'd check the grub
docs for how to restore the MBR. Once you can boot XP again,
then just install grub into the Linux boot partition. You'll
see Boot Magic first on boot, then when you select Linux you'll
get the grub screen and just select Linux again there.
Also when you set up Boot Magic you can make a bootable restore
diskette that reinstalls your Boot Magic setup if it gets hosed.
For more info I'd suggest comp.os.linux.setup
