- transferring data
- Posted by Al D on June 24th, 2004
I just bought a new computer. How can I transfer all my personal stuff from
the old harddrive to the new harddrive. Is there a quick and easy way? Or
do I have to put all the old stuff to a CD and copy it from that to the new
harddrive? Can anyone help? Thanks.

What is your OS? Do you have room inside to put your old drive? If so,
install that old drive and copy your data over to the new drive. That's one
way to transfer data. There are others as you will see.

Attach the old hard drive to the new system, copy it off then put it back
where it came from.

You can use a bi-directional cable which costs about six dollars and
attatches to each parallel port and the data can be transferred using the
program that comes with Windows called direct cable transfer. I have not
used it since Win98 so don't know if they still have it on XP. You could
setup a network with a network cable which costs more and you must have a
network input on each computer. You can temporarily put the old hdd as a
slave into the new machine and just copy the info onto the new hdd but your
warranty might not allow you to open the case of the new computer so if that
is true don't use that method but I think it is an easy way. You can even
buy an external case that holds old hdds and plugs into the USB port then
after you transfer the data you can use the device for temporary storage or
other transfer jobs that might occur.
