Trying to determine the Product key - again
Posted by IzodIzod on May 8th, 2005

I didn't do a good enough job explaining. I got the software, but it
doesn't allow you to look at the CD. I have the Software on a CD. I can
get to the ini file.
There the product code is 33 characters. When I go to install, it ask for 5
groups of 5 character's (25). I can't seem to find the right combination.
I was hoping the software would look at the CD. I don't have the Cover and
I'm trying to reload it.....

Thanks for your help.

There is NO key on the CD. It's on a paper or sticker that comes WITH the
CD. If the software is installed on the computer, you can get the KEY using
the software recommended earlier. If you have CDs, not installed, no key,
you're SOL.

;o) old story...someone didn't read the instructions when they opened the
box "Do not lose this key - you will need it to install or reinstall this
software". (Duh!) I can't imagine someone trying manually to create a 25
character key code. How many years do you estimate it will take?

Okay, assuming that you have a legitimate copy of the software and it's
licensed to you, give a call to MS and ask them for help. If you're on
the up and up, they'll try to help you. After all, you *are* a paying
customer.

If none of this applies to you, you need to sharpen your skills at
ripping off software companies without publicly asking for help. And
you'll get precious little help in this group (if the past is any
indication).

Toolman Tim spewed forth...

This could be wrong (it has been a long time since I had this kind of
math). If I remember correctly the number of permutations using all 26
letters and 10 numbers would be 36! or roughly 3.71993327 × 10^41. Even
at one try every millisecond, it would take 3.71993327 × 10^38 seconds.
Now, there are approximately 3.1536 x 10^7 seconds in a year. So, it
would take 1.1795831 x 10^31 years. Thats:
11,795,831,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 years. (11+ nonillion years
(US))
(approximately :-)

Jeez, then them hacker/crackers must be fucking brilliant. They usually
have a keygen available for download within about 20 seconds of a

Your right... The Software's ligit. And after a long time elapse and a
couple of moves I can't find the cover. I'm sure MS will help. This
certainly isn't the first time something like this has happened. However, I
thought I had my bases covered when I copied some files to the back. There
I was able to find the ini file which has a product code but of course it
needs decyfering (sp).

Sorry to have bothered anybody Da

My math is probably wrong. Just trying to be a smartass.
I'm thinking hacker/crackers don't crack things using brute force (trying
every possible key). I'm sure they use quite a bit of reverse engineering
on the code that validates the key. Just a guess.

They usually just figure out the algorithm, using past examples as hints
to the new one. For one thing, using a Product Key was never meant to be
a really strong anti-hacking tool, mostly just discourages casual
software copiers. Secondly, from what I hear, many of the algorithm
cracks are leaked by insiders.

The Product Key is not the CD Key that you need for installation.
They are 2 separate numbers.
The CD key is not some magical permutation or combination of the Product
Key.
The CD Key is either on a sticker on the back of the CD cover, or it is
on the authenticity certificate.
The software will look at the CD (I assume you mean during install)
otherwise it wouldn't start the install.
The CD Key is not anywhere on the install CD.

No doubt it is wrong. I'll cut you off at the first mistake.

Oopsies. Bad luck for you, eh.
