- Two modems on one cable Internet line?
- Posted by Bob Jones on December 16th, 2006
Instead of using a router to connect two PCs to one cable Internet
connection, I'd like to run the cable connection to two modems, one for
each computer.
This will help avoid running Ethernet line through the house.
Can two modems use the same Internet connection? Or do they each
require their own addresses?
Thanks.

on at the same time.

And since cable/DSL modems usually stay on most all of the time (even
when your computer is off), this would not work. And if you don't want
to run Ethernet through the house, use a wireless router--they're coming
down in price now (for the regular 802.11g ones, that is. The
"draft-802.11n" models are still early-adopter priced). Or you could run
powerline networking, but I think wireless is cheaper and about the same
speed.

Each modem will have to be on its own account. It is best and most
reasonable to use a home network. You should consider to go wireless if
you cannot work with cable runs in your home.

Some cable companies allow a customer to have multiple IP addresses (for
free). Others will offer a second IP for a small fee each month. In
either case, two cable accounts are not necessary.
But a router and wireless are the best answer in this case. I wouldn't
put a PC on a cable line without a router.

Thanks, everyone. I'll probably go with the wireless router.

By definition, each cable modem will use its own Internet
connection, and to use both (in most places!), you'll need two accounts.
Have you considered a wireless link between one computer's site
(where you'd put the modem and router) and the other? That'd avoid the
Ethernet cable.
Also, for about 5 or 6 months worth of cable account, you can get a
powerline Ethernet extension that uses the power line to connect from one
end of the house to the other.
