uninstall ME
Posted by Pompey© on April 11th, 2004

Hi
Trying to uninstall windows ME on another pc... I have no uninstall in the
"add and remove programs" function via control panel...Also cannot uninstall
via dos as advised by Microsoft KB..
1.. At the Microsoft Windows Millennium Start-up menu, choose the Minimal
Boot option, and then press ENTER.
2.. At the command prompt, type c: and then press ENTER.
3.. Type cd windows\command and then press ENTER.
4.. Type uninstal.exe and then press ENTER.
5.. You receive several warning or confirmation prompts. For each prompt,
press Y, and then press ENTER to continue. This process can take several
minutes.
the uninstal.exe just says "Bad Command"....Could anybody advise please.

Thankyou...... Kim

Hmm, you don't uninstall an Operating system.

Uninstall will only work if it is an "upgraded" version, i.e., puting Win ME
Upgrade OS over the top of Win98. Then, when you uninstall, you get Win98
back.

Why not? According to;

uninstalling WinME shouldn't be too big a deal.

If you are gonna reference an article by someone, READ it first:
-----
MORE INFORMATION
If you cannot start Windows Me either because you are running an expired
beta version or because your installation of Windows Me has experienced a
catastrophic problem, you may be able to revert to your previous version of
Windows.
-----

That is a clip directly from your article. Are you using an expired beta
version? Are you trying to go back to a previous version? If so, then ME
might be uninstallable. Unless of course somewhere along the way, someone
deleted the uninstall files by using disk cleanup tools or some similar
method.

So, exactly *why* are you trying to uninstall ME? What are your reasons,
what do you need to achieve?

Was this an upgrade install of ME, or a clean install? If it was a clean
install, the uninstall won't work. You'll have to fdisk, format, and
install the OS of your choice.

If it was an install over a previous OS.

I read it. All the way through. Did you?

And it's not just any old article by, "someone". It's a direct link to the
Microsoft site, and it clearly states an uninstall of Windows ME is possible
under certain well-defined conditions. IN fact? I think, "How to Uninstall
Windows Millennium Edition" is the TITLE of the article.

Once again? .... It's not *MY* article, it's Microsoft's. I didn't write
it. I merely referenced it. Geez!

*I*, am not trying to do anything, dimwit. "Pompey" is the one with the
problem.

Or can't you follow a thread, either?

Maybe you *did* read it, but you obviously missed a few of the finer points.
Like it only works if you are using a "beta" version, or your temporary
install is out of date, and only if you chose to include the uninstall
option during the initial setup. Which you have no idea what the OP did,
has, or wants to do. And since you replied to my post, I replied to that
post, and anyone with a real brain could have figured that out without being
an ASS about it. So play nice or bugger off....

Very true - all software installed after the upgrade will have to be
reinstalled, any hardware changes are *really* gonna muck things up...I
wouldn't want to try it more than a few days after the upgrade had been
performed. In fact, I don't like upgrades at all. I usually charge a
customer less to do a clean install even though it takes longer, just
because I don't want them coming back with complaints/problems.

What the computer is telling you is you already went into the control
panel and removed the option to do a UNINSTALL of windows'98. In the
control panel, there used to be an option under add/remove programs
to remove the saved system files.... You deleted them to save space.
Now the only way to remove Windows/ME is to boot-up with Windows'98 or
whatever was there, and install it....

Kim, I agree that it seems dumb, but that is the way Windows installs. The
"reinstall" over an existing system allows people to fix problems with the
existing installation.

Do you have the Windows product key? You don't want to erase anything unless
you do. If you don't, there is computer program that can tell you what the
product key is: http://www.magicaljellybean.com/keyfinder.shtml

You can clean off the drive with the format command before installing
Windows again. Be warned: if there is *anything* on the drive you want to
keep, think twice! If you don't have the setup disks for the other programs
installed, you will lose them.

To do a "clean" install, you need to format the hard drive. Start with
booting to a command prompt. That may or may not be possible with your ME
setup disk(s). If it isn't, you can make a boot disk from Control Panel /
Add Remove Software. Make sure the disk boots and has the format command on
it. If it doesn't, copy the format command from (I think...)
C:\windows\command to your boot disk.

At the command prompt, type "format c:" and press enter (no quotation
marks).

After the format is complete you can reinstall Windows ME without all the
previous owners stuff.

You may find that some of the drivers and such are not setup correctly -
particularly if there is hardware in the system newer than the ME driver
list. If you have difficulty with any of those, I'm sure you can get the
help you need here.
