unwanted Java update offer
Posted by jw 1111 on May 13th, 2006

Everytime i start my pc i get a box popping up saying: New updates from Java
update. if i click on the box i get two options to download;

J2SE Runtime environment 5.0

and

J2SE Runtime 1.5.0_06-b05

i didn't request any of this. there is no option to cancel it. the options
offered are 'download' or 'remind me later'.
could you please explain to a novice the best thing to do here. preferably
to get rid of it.

Well, the ->best thing to do would be to download the current version of
the Java runtime, but that's just my opinion. :-)

Since you say you're a "novice", I won't suggest that you use REGEDIT to
find and remove the entry

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVerions\Run\SunJavaUpdateSched

so that it won't run each time you boot.

If you really want to remove it, use a utility like the one at
http://www.windowsstartup.com/ which allows you to select what gets run at
boot time and remove that entry, or use the standard Microsoft
utility "msconfig" to do the same thing with a little less flash.

Control Panel / Java / Update tab / unselect the update check.

Update it, both of those are needed to patch a security hole in Java.

Considering that these are security updates, you should accept them.

Bert Hyman brought next idea :
....or go to Control Panel, Java, Updates and untick the 'Check for Java
updates' box before Applying.

If you can't see why you need the security updates or newer released
versions (and can't figure out how to use the Java applet in Control
Panel to configure the auto-update feature), you should probably
uninstall Java completely (and, to head off the next question, use the
Add/Remove Programs applet in Control Panel to uninstall the J2SE
entries).
