Update - RAM not recognized
Posted by Canon Guy on January 18th, 2008

Original query:

XP Home, SP2, Two 512 MB sticks of RAM. All updates. Device Manager looks
fine. Just reloaded OS and all is well, with one exception. When I rt. click
'My Computer' > Properties, it indicates 480 MB of RAM (32 MB onboard
Video). If I open Aida SysInfo, it shows both sticks of installed RAM (even
their serial numbers). In prior OS installation all was normal. There were
no changes made to the system before reinstallation. Any ideas on what's
going on?

I finally got around to taking down the machine and all I had to do was
reseat the RAM. Problem solved! Why is it that flukes such as this happen
with no plausible relationship to other activities? Aside from inserting the
XP restore disk I hadn't even touched the machine.
Again, thanks for everyone's input.

Back in the day, on the old Screen Savers TV show, Leo Laporte used to call
such things 'Bitrot'. Guess that just about covers it.

Heat, constant expansion and contraction causing it to creep.
Also don't know if it applies so much now but in olden days you could get a
chemical reaction between dissimilar metals on the RAM contacts and the RAM
slot.

As I suggested might be likely I believe. Glad you sorted it out. Hope
you didn't pull any muscles taking it off the shelf.

LOL
Thanks Chuck. I have to put a chair at the desk, step to the desktop, reach
behind blindly and pull cables, bend down, place it on the desk, climb down,
take it to the bench. Worst is when it's back up and I use a flashlight and
mirror to reconnect everything. What's that joke about the monkey and a
football?
Built another machine since my OP:

My biggest mistake was not building the shelving system with rear access for
everything.
