- upgrade problem
- Posted by clarky on January 1st, 2004
I have just tried to upgrade my system using a Gigabyte GA-7N400 Pro 2
Motherboard and an AMD athlon 2.8 CPU.
When I boot up the system it locks up after about 1 minute. If I then reset
or Power off the system, It will not restart, and no signal is sent to the
Monitor. I then have to wait for about 20 minutes before it will start up to
the bios screen again and then it just does the same thing again.
I have tried a new graphics card and also psu.
Is it a faulty M/B or CPU ? or is there something else I should try.

Check for overheating, and make sure that the fans are operating
correctly.

Fans working fine, and CPU temp running at a steady 49-50 deg C.

Check to make sure all those little connectors for things like your hard
drive lights (front panel connectors) etc are plugged in to the right
pins. Believe it or not they can stop your system from booting if plugged
in incorrectly.

Remove *every* piece of hardware, except what is absolutely
necessary for the machine to run -- PSU, CPU, RAM, Graphics
adapter. Run the machine for a while, and gradually replace
one item at a time, until the situation re-occurs. This it to
try to pinpoint what piece of hardware may be causing the
lockups.

I also agree about reducing hardware to minimum, but would also question
whether the board is shorting out to the case. It may not be the problem,
but would be on my mind. Also, check the output wattage of the p/s. Sounds
elementary, but check it anyway and let us know what the output
is....200?...300? 350?.....

sound,Lan, and firewire port.
Using a 400w p/s.
Don't think it is shorting out on case as it does boot up at first.

Is it Windows that locks up or does it lock up in the BIOS?
