USB 2 PCI cards??
Posted by Bob on January 18th, 2007

I have an older system with a 1g processor, 133m buss, USB 1.1, and XP
home OS. I'm considering adding a USB 2.0/FireWire PCI card to give me
a little more versatility without having to replace the motherboard.
So here's the question: would I really be gaining any speed? Since the
USB2.0 can handle 480Mbps, but the intereface between the USB card &
processor is a 133Mbps buss, is there really going to be any apparent
increase in data transfer speed? Also, would the existing bios support
an add-on USB 2.0 card?
TIA

All yes.
USB2 devices, including hard drives, rarely actually operate at theoretical
maximum throughput.
If you have USB2 devices and are operating them through USB1 ports you will
see a significant increase in speed with the USB 2 card.
